It’s impossible to ignore the date we just passed.

Dr. King’s legacy is often reduced to “dreaming,” but his actual methodology began with seeing. He insisted that a nation look directly at the “hidden tension” that already existed. As he wrote in Letter from Birmingham Jail , “Constructive, nonviolent tension is necessary for growth.”

Seeing comes before fixing. Naming comes before change.

This week, in the Signpost Sessions, we’re practicing that kind of seeing. Moving from the abstract to the concrete.

The Practice: Notice and Name

Last week, we chose a word or two. This week, we take that word for a walk.

Most days, we move on autopilot. Numb to both friction and beauty. We look at everything, but we see very little.

This practice is about slowing our attention just enough to notice what’s actually here.

Your Invitation (Offline)

Sometime this week, take 10 minutes to step out of your routine. Literally step outside, or simply sit in a different chair.

We invite you to notice three textures of reality :

1. The Friction. Something gritty, heavy, or broken.
(A systemic barrier. A personal ache. A crumbling piece of infrastructure.)

2. The Glimmer. Something that’s working, blooming, or quietly resisting.
(A colleague’s kindness. A student’s breakthrough. A weed pushing through concrete.)

3. The Neutral. Something that simply is.
(The hum of the fridge. The color of the sky. The traffic.)

The Somatic Check

When you notice each one, don’t analyze it.

Just name it.

Then pause and notice where that naming lands in your body. Does the friction tighten your jaw? Does the glimmer soften your shoulders?

No fixing. No solving. Just noticing.

Why We Do This

We are retraining our attention.

Before we can be signposts for others, we have to learn how to read the landscape ourselves. The storms, the shelter, and the ground beneath our feet.

This is how we begin.

Looking for community?

If it helps, we have a quiet Signal group for Signpost Sessions. Used for gentle prompts, optional check-ins, and shared noticing. No pressure to post. Lurking is welcome.
