Signal is a free, open-source messaging app built for privacy. Unlike most apps, Signal doesn’t show ads, collect your data, or track what you do. Every message and call is encrypted from end to end, so only you and the person you’re talking to can read or hear it. Not even Signal can access your conversations.
Why Use Signal?
Using Signal is like putting your messages in a locked box that only you and your friend have the keys to. No one else, not hackers, phone companies, or even Signal, can open it.
Here’s what makes Signal different:
-
✅ End-to-end encryption by default – every message, call, photo, and video is protected.
-
🧠 Open-source code – anyone can inspect how Signal works, and security experts regularly audit it.
-
🛑 No ads or tracking – Signal is run by a nonprofit, so your data stays yours.
-
🌍 Works globally – message or call anyone using data or Wi-Fi, with no extra fees.
Signal supports texting, voice/video calls, sending files, GIFs, voice notes, and more—all with strong privacy built in.
Step-by-Step Setup
-
Download Signal
- Get it from signal.org or your phone’s app store.
-
Register with your phone number
- This is required for now, but you can keep it private from others.
-
Create a PIN
- You’ll use this PIN if you reinstall Signal. It helps protect your account and your privacy.
-
Set up your profile
- You can choose any name or emoji. This is what others see. Your name and photo are also encrypted.
-
(Optional but recommended) Add a username
-
In Settings > Profile, tap the “@” field to create a username. This lets others message you without ever knowing your phone number.
-
You can share your username via a link or a QR code. If you later change or delete your username, no one is notified, and people can’t find you using the old one.
-
-
(Optional) Back up your chats
- On Android, you can create an encrypted local backup. On iPhone, you can use iCloud or transfer from another device. This protects your history in case your phone is lost.
Everyday Use
Signal works just like any other messaging app, only more secure.
-
✏️ Tap the pencil icon to start a chat.
-
📞 Tap the phone or video icon to make free, encrypted calls anywhere.
-
💬 Send text, pictures, voice notes, files, emojis, and more.
Privacy Features You’ll Love
🔐 Disappearing messages - Set messages to auto-delete after a certain time (from 5 seconds to 1 week). Tap a contact’s name > Disappearing Messages to turn it on.
🔒 Screen Lock - Under Settings > Privacy, turn on PIN or Face ID lock so no one else can open Signal on your phone.
🛑 Incognito Keyboard - Also in Privacy settings , this tells your phone not to learn or store what you type.
🔕 Hide notifications - You can hide message previews in notifications so others can’t peek.
✅ Verify Safety Numbers - Each chat has a unique “safety number”—a kind of digital handshake. Verifying it helps ensure no one is impersonating your contact. Open the chat > tap their name > Verify Safety Number. If they match (in person or over a trusted call), your chat is secure.
