As we embark on an exciting new phase for the Initiative for Literacy in a Digital Age, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to our Founding Director, Shelbie Witte. Her vision and leadership have been instrumental in shaping this community into what it is today—a vibrant hub of innovation and collaboration focused on digital literacy.

A Legacy of Collaboration

Under Shelbie’s guidance, we’ve built a culture that values open dialogue, mutual support, and collective growth. Her dedication to empowering educators and community leaders has fostered countless initiatives and partnerships that continue to thrive. The foundation she has laid ensures that the Initiative remains a dynamic space for exploring the evolving landscape of literacy in the digital era.

Embracing Decentralization

As we move forward, we’re embracing a decentralized approach that aligns with the evolving needs of our global community. This shift towards a more fluid, networked structure allows us to tap into diverse perspectives and expertise, ensuring our work remains responsive and impactful. By distributing leadership and fostering collaborative networks, we can create a more inclusive and adaptive space for exploring digital literacy.

The Power of Open Research

A key component of this next chapter is an open research initiative that will examine how communities organize and collaborate in decentralized networks. Through deep listening, co-designing initiatives with community members, and exploring innovative models, we aim to uncover effective strategies for bridging digital divides and fostering inclusive, community-led literacy efforts. This research will not only inform our own work but will also contribute valuable insights to the broader field of digital literacy.

Learning from Others

One of the most exciting aspects of this transition is the opportunity to learn from our community. Whether through interviews, focus groups, or open forums, every voice matters in shaping the Initiative’s direction. Our goal is to build knowledge and develop a shared framework that supports decentralized collaboration and drives meaningful change in digital literacy education.

Looking Ahead

While today’s message focuses on honoring the past and setting the stage for the future, there’s much more to come. In the weeks ahead, I’ll share insights into some of the exciting initiatives we have planned, including open research opportunities, summer learning MOOCs, and additional collaborative projects. There are a lot of moving pieces, and I look forward to working alongside all of you to bring these ideas to life.

Building a Collective Future

As we transition into this new phase, I invite each of you to join us in shaping the future of the Initiative. Your participation—whether through research, feedback, or active collaboration—is invaluable. Together, we can build a resilient, adaptive network that addresses the complex challenges of digital literacy in a rapidly changing world. Once again, thank you to Shelbie Witte for her incredible leadership and for laying the groundwork for this journey. I am honored to enter this role and excited about what we will accomplish together.
